Garden Planning software

The Garden Wizard is a graphical gardening software program that helps you design and calendar a high-yield vegetable garden using techniques proven in some of the most challenging climates and soils.

Also includes online lessons and a short video of Dr. Jacob Mittleider actually creating a vegetable garden. You can use soil-beds, containers or Grow-Boxes, or single rows (plots must have consistent bed lengths and path widths). On CD-ROM, and requires WIN9x, or WinNT with SP3.

In nine easy steps you are asked for your geographic location; garden plot size and orientation; and desired plants (over 50 to choose from) and yields. Garden Wizard then designs your garden, places plants in an optimal order, and provides a daily calendar for sowing and maintenance based on the specific freeze dates for your area. For details on the 9 steps, look at the Garden Master.

Spring and Fall freeze dates for over 3,000 US locations are included within the Garden Wizard. However, you can change freeze dates for your geographic location, change plant placment, and customize a garden for most backyard and many commercial applications.

Tip of the Day

It's Spring Planting Time! For those of you in the Northern hemisphere who have winters, March and early April are the time you need to be preparing your soil and planting the hardy vegetable crops such as radishes, peas, cabbage and broccoli.

The freeze/thaw cycles of winter have broken up and loosened most soils, so as soon as it's not muddy, go in and give everything a good weeding with the 2-way hoe (see Tools). Weeding thoroughly this early gives you the upper hand, and is very important.

If you grew a Mittleider garden last year, your beds will be easy to re-make. Just apply Pre-Plant and Weekly Feed to the bed area, then till them in, place strings on your stakes, and re-make the beds.

Be sure to re-check the level of each bed accurately, since they may have changed a little. Do not be satisfied with anything more than 1" fall in a 30'-long soil-bed. Good Gardening!
