Shade Cloth or Other Partial Covering to Reduce Heat

Author: Jim Kennard

Q. I live in Mesa AZ and already we are having temps of 107 in May. I need to understand better how to shade my plants so that they don't overheat but still get enough sunlight. A. We recommend 25-30% shade cloth, placed above the plants to shade them during the hottest 4-5 hours of the day. This is accomplished with vertically-grown plants by placing arched PVC pipe over the T-Frame and covering with the shade cloth. Cut more than needed, and roll up or down to adjust the time of coverage.
