Q. Do I need to add lime or gypsum for my pre-plant mix. I live in Edmonton, Alberta and we have an average annual rainfall of 33cm (13in) and an average annual snowfall of 132cm (55in). Do you take the snowfall into consideration, or only worry about what falls during the summer? A. So long as you are measuring the water content of the snow, and it falls on your garden - and not just up in the mountains - you take all of it into consideration. When the total annual rainfall is less than 20" you should use gypsum in your Pre-Plant Mix. When you receive more than 20" of annual rainfall you should use lime - either agricultural or dolomite.
